This won't work the java script executes when the link is clicked it is not the link itself.
Below is what I normally use and how would I incorporate that?

You can use
NewWindow(this.href,'name','490','400','yes');
code in an item link:
["text", "javascript:NewWindow(url,'name','490','400','yes');"]
But if you don't want that, you can just insert <a> into an item text.
Q: I am spending a lot more time and have figured a few things out. One more question please: How do I specify the target link I want a dhtml submenu to go to?
I see HREF specified in the code, but no where in the program to specify it.
A: See, the following parameter sets target for all items
var itemTarget="_self";
If you want to set different target for each item you should set it inthe "Item Parameters" window. Choose your item in the main window andset target in the target field.

A: No, unfortunately it is not possible to rebuild the menu without reloading of the page now. We'll add this feature in the next version of the menu.

A: It is not possible to rebuild/reload the menu at once,but you can use our API function to change any menu itemsw/0 page reloading, please see

I've been looking at the javascript tree source and am a bit worried that the links used will not be recognised by Search Engine robots - do you have any information regarding implementation of your menus so that the links are fully visible to search engines ?
A: You can generate search engine friendly code.
Deluxe Tree is a search engine friendly menu since v2.4.
To create a search engine friendly menu you should add additional html code within your html page:

</div>
To generate such a code use Deluxe Tuner application.
You can find this GUI in the trial package.
Run Tuner, load your menu and click Tools/Generate SE-friendly Code (F3).
